📜 History & Origins

Small settlements existed at the Hlaing River mouth for centuries under the Mons. King Alaungpaya founded Yangon in 1755 as a military outpost, naming it Dagon, then renaming it Yangon meaning 'end of strife'. The British captured it in 1824 during the First Anglo-Burmese War and developed it as a planned colonial capital after 1852, introducing a grid street pattern still visible in the city centre. Myanmar gained independence in 1948.

Leisure Highlights

  • Shwedagon Pagoda — one of Southeast Asia's most sacred Buddhist sites
  • Sule Pagoda and colonial downtown architecture
  • Kandawgyi Lake and National Museum
  • Bogyoke Aung San Market — crafts, gems and textiles
  • Botahtaung Pagoda on the Yangon River

🎒 Visitor Tip

Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda at dawn and at dusk for very different atmospheres — modest dress is required and shoes must be removed at all entrance points. The colonial-era architecture of downtown Yangon (Sule Pagoda area) is significant and largely intact, though deteriorating. The Myanmar political situation since the 2021 military coup requires checking current travel advisories before visiting — the situation has been volatile. Taxis are the primary transport; negotiate fares before boarding.
