The Tongva people inhabited the area for thousands of years before Spanish missionaries established Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1771. The formal settlement El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles was founded on 4 September 1781 by 44 settlers from Mexico. Los Angeles was incorporated as an American city in 1850, two years after California became a US state following the Mexican-American War.
