📜 History & Origins
A small Bani Yas fishing and pearling settlement existed at Dubai Creek as early as 1799. The Al Maktoum family took control of Dubai in 1833 when around 800 members of the clan migrated from Abu Dhabi and have ruled the emirate ever since. Dubai declared itself a free port in 1901, which established its reputation as a trading centre. Modest oil revenues from the 1960s funded infrastructure, but the city deliberately diversified away from oil, which now contributes less than 1% of GDP.
