📜 History & Origins

Aboriginal Australians — including the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation — inhabited the Sydney region for at least 30,000 years. European settlement began on 26 January 1788 when British Captain Arthur Phillip established the first permanent penal colony at Sydney Cove, a date now marked as Australia Day. The colony grew rapidly from this single cove, and Sydney was formally incorporated as a city in 1842.

The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is the best way to see Sydney Harbour for the price of a regular transit fare.

Geography & Climate

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Sydney lies within the Sydney Basin, a structural depression surrounded by sandstone plateaus — the Hornsby Plateau to the north and the Woronora Plateau to the south, with the Blue Mountains to the west. The harbour area is characterised by ria coastline — drowned river valleys creating the complex system of bays, headlands and inlets. The Cumberland Plain west of the harbour is relatively flat. Highest point in Greater Sydney is Mount Tomah (1,011m) in the Blue Mountains to the west.
