Although settlements existed earlier, Singapore's modern founding dates to 6 February 1819, when Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company signed a treaty with local rulers to establish a free port. The port rapidly grew into one of Asia's most important trading hubs. Singapore gained independence from Britain in 1963 and became fully independent when it separated from Malaysia on 9 August 1965.
