📜 History & Origins
The Celtic Parisii tribe settled on the Île de la Cité in the Seine around 250 BCE. Julius Caesar conquered the settlement — then called Lutetia — in 52 BCE. Under Roman rule it became a regional administrative centre, and by 508 CE Clovis I made Paris capital of the Frankish Empire. By the medieval period it was the most populous city in Western Europe.
