📜 History & Origins
According to Roman tradition, Rome was founded on 21 April 753 BCE by Romulus on the Palatine Hill — one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Archaeological evidence confirms a hilltop village on the Palatine from around 900 BCE. Rome became a republic in 509 BCE, the centre of the world's largest western empire by 100 CE, and was the most populous city on Earth during the reign of Emperor Augustus at nearly 1 million inhabitants. It became the capital of unified Italy in 1871.

Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on the Seven Hills above the floodplain of the Tiber River, which flows through the city before entering the Tyrrhenian Sea 24km to the southwest. The hills — Palatine, Capitoline, Aventine, Caelian, Esquiline, Viminal and Quirinal — create a distinctive undulating terrain at 15–75m elevation within the historic centre. The wider municipality extends to the Apennine foothills to the east and the coast to the southwest.
