📜 History & Origins
Evidence of human settlement at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich dates back 6,400 years. The Romans established a customs post and garrison called Turicum in the 1st century BCE at the site of today's Lindenhügel hill. The city received imperial immediacy in the 13th century, making it a free imperial city. In 1519 the reformer Ulrich Zwingli began the Swiss Reformation from the Grossmünster church here, making Zurich one of the birthplaces of Protestantism.

The wider canton includes the pre-Alpine Jura foothills. The Alps are visible on clear days to the south.
