📜 History & Origins

The Wuhan area has been settled for over 3,500 years — remains of the Panlong City commercial settlement from the Shang Dynasty (c.1500 BCE) have been excavated 5km north of today's city centre. Wuhan as a modern entity is the merger of three ancient cities: Wuchang (founded 223 CE), Hankou (16th century) and Hanyang, unified in 1927. The 1911 Wuchang Uprising that toppled the Qing Dynasty and established the Republic of China began here.

The Wuhan Metro is extensive and covers all major sites. The Yellow Crane Tower on the banks of the Yangtze is Wuhan's most iconic monument — 5th-century original, rebuilt in 1985. The East Lake (Dong Hu) is the largest urban lake in China and excellent for cycling. The Wuchang and Hankou areas have distinct characters — Wuchang is historical and institutional; Hankou is colonial-era commercial with preserved European bank buildings along the Bund. Hot dry noodles (re gan mian) are Wuhan's signature breakfast.
