Overview
Wellington is New Zealand's capital and southernmost capital city in the world, home to 216,000 people. Compact, hilly, and windswept — officially one of the windiest cities on Earth — it punches above its size in culture: the world-class Te Papa museum, a café-per-capita ratio higher than New York, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and Wētā Workshop (The Lord of the Rings effects studio) all call Wellington home.

📜 History & Origins
Wellington was settled by the Māori people centuries before European contact — the area was known as Te Whanganui-a-Tara. European settlers arrived in 1840 aboard ships sent by the New Zealand Company. Wellington replaced Auckland as New Zealand's capital in 1865 because of its more central location between the North and South Islands. Its deep natural harbour and strong geographic position made it the political and administrative centre, while Auckland remained the commercial hub.

Te Papa Tongarewa (free, open daily) is one of the best national museums in the world. Take the Kelburn Cable Car up to the Botanic Garden for city views. Cuba Street is Wellington's bohemian heart. For a half-day trip, book Wētā Workshop Unleashed to see film props from The Lord of the Rings.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built around Port Nicholson (Te Whanganui-a-Tara), a deep natural harbour sheltered by rugged hills on all sides. The city climbs steeply from the waterfront into suburbs perched on ridges up to 400m. The Wellington Fault runs along the base of the western hills — the city sits on one of New Zealand's most active earthquake faults. Cook Strait, 25km wide, separates the North and South Islands at the harbour entrance and channels powerful winds through the city.
