📜 History & Origins
Founded around 1300 by Duke Bolesław II of Masovia on a Vistula River fishing settlement. Warsaw became the Polish capital in 1596 when King Sigismund III Vasa relocated his court from Kraków. The city was rebuilt almost entirely from rubble after World War II destroyed over 85% of its structures.

🎒 Visitor Tip
The Old Town looks centuries old but was rebuilt brick by brick from wartime photographs after 1945 — it does not look reconstructed. Spend a morning there, then visit the Warsaw Rising Museum in the afternoon. Prices are significantly lower than Western European capitals; a good restaurant dinner rarely breaks £20 a head.
