📜 History & Origins

The site at the Vindobona Roman military camp on the Danube was established around 15 BCE. The settlement became known as Wenia in the Carolingian era. Vienna became the seat of the Habsburg dynasty in 1440 and from 1558 the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. At its 19th-century peak, Vienna governed an empire of 52 million people across Central Europe. The Ringstrasse boulevard, built 1857–1865, gave the city its current monumental character.
