📜 History & Origins

The area was home to the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations for millennia before European contact. The first permanent European settlers arrived in the 1860s after the Fraser River gold rush. The city was incorporated on 6 April 1886, just months before a fire destroyed most of it. Vancouver grew rapidly as the western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway, completed that same year, which linked it to the rest of the country.
