📜 History & Origins
The area was inhabited by the Mississauga First Nation and earlier by the Haudenosaunee people long before European contact. The British secured the Toronto Purchase from the Mississauga in 1787 and in 1793 established the town of York as capital of Upper Canada. During the War of 1812 American forces briefly occupied and burned the town. It was renamed Toronto and incorporated as a city in 1834. The word Toronto likely derives from the Mohawk tkaronto, meaning 'where there are trees standing in the water.'

The TTC subway covers downtown and connects to GO Transit regional rail for suburbs. The PATH network — 30km of underground walkways connecting 75 buildings — is essential in winter. CN Tower views are best in clear weather; book online to skip the queue. Kensington Market and Chinatown are adjacent and the best walk for food and culture. Winters are genuinely cold (-15°C is common in January).
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on a broad, gently sloping plateau on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario. The city rises from the lake at 76m to its highest point of 209m at Steeles Avenue in the north. Numerous river valleys — Don, Humber, Rouge — cut through the city, most left as wooded ravines. The former shoreline of glacial Lake Iroquois forms a visible escarpment 3-4km inland, roughly following Davenport Road.
