📜 History & Origins

Founded on 11 April 1909 when 66 Jewish families gathered on the sand dunes north of Jaffa to allocate plots by lottery. The name means 'Hill of Spring' in Hebrew, taken from Theodor Herzl's Zionist novel Altneuland. The city was explicitly founded as a modern Jewish urban settlement adjacent to the ancient Arab port of Jaffa. Following Israel's independence on 14 May 1948, Tel Aviv-Yafo merged with Jaffa in 1950.

The light rail (Red and Green Lines) and bus network cover the city, though Tel Aviv is very walkable along the beachfront. The Carmel Market (Shuk HaCarmel) on a Friday morning is the best sensory introduction to the city. Rothschild Boulevard is the heart of the Bauhaus White City and an excellent evening walk. Jaffa Old City is 30 minutes south on foot or by bus and is architecturally and historically fascinating. The Mediterranean beaches are free, clean and swimmable from April to November.

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built on low coastal dunes along the eastern Mediterranean shore. The terrain is almost entirely flat — 0 to 30m above sea level — with the city running 15km along the coast. The Yarkon River forms the northern boundary. The sand dune landscape was stabilised and built over in the early 20th century. No significant hills; the Sharon Plain extends eastward from the coast.
