📜 History & Origins
The Taipei Basin was settled by Han Chinese immigrants from Fujian in the early 18th century. Taipei became the administrative centre of Taiwan under Qing Dynasty rule in 1875 and was formally established as a prefectural capital. Japanese colonial administration (1895–1945) modernised the city grid. Following the Republic of China government's relocation to Taiwan in 1949, Taipei became the capital, growing rapidly through the post-war economic miracle into a high-tech metropolis.
