Overview
Santiago is the capital and by far the largest city of Chile, with 5.6 million people in the Santiago Metropolitan Region as of 2025 — nearly 30% of the entire Chilean population in a single conurbation. Set in a valley between the Andes and the Coastal Range, it offers one of South America's most striking urban backdrops: on clear winter days, the Andean peaks exceed 6,000m directly behind the city skyline.

📜 History & Origins
Founded on 12 February 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia on a small bend of the Mapocho River, on a site inhabited by the Picunche people. Valdivia named it Santiago del Nuevo Extremo in honour of St James. The city served as the capital of the Captaincy General of Chile under Spanish colonial rule from its founding, and became the capital of the independent Republic of Chile in 1818.

🎒 Visitor Tip
The Santiago Metro is clean, safe and extensive — the Bip! card works on all metro lines and buses. The Cerro San Cristóbal funicular takes you above the smog line for the best Andes views. Barrio Italia and Lastarria are the best neighbourhoods for coffee, street art and dining. Check air quality before visiting in winter (June–August) — thermal inversions trap smog in the valley and visibility to the Andes can be zero. Wine country (Maipo Valley) is 45 minutes by car.

Located in the Santiago Basin — a wide depression in the Central Valley of Chile — at an average elevation of 567m above sea level. Flanked to the east by the Andean Precordillera (with peaks rising to 6,570m at Tupungato) and to the west by the Coastal Range (reaching around 1,700m). The Mapocho River flows east to west through the city. The basin traps winter air pollution, creating seasonal smog events known as preemergencias.
