📜 History & Origins

Home to the Kumeyaay people for thousands of years. Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo anchored in the bay on 28 September 1542, making it the first point of European contact on the US Pacific Coast — earning San Diego the title 'birthplace of California'. The first permanent mission was established by Franciscan friar Junípero Serra at Mission San Diego de Alcalá in 1769. The city was incorporated in 1850 when California became a US state.
