📜 History & Origins
The site at the confluence of the Vltava Valley has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic period. According to legend, Prague was founded by Princess Libuše. The first stone Přemysl castle was built at Prague Castle (Hradčany) in the late 9th century. Prague became the capital of Bohemia under the Přemyslid dynasty and reached its greatest medieval power under Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (1346–1378), who founded Charles University in 1348 — the oldest university in Central Europe.

🎒 Visitor Tip
The Prague Card covers unlimited transit and entry to over 60 attractions. Walk across Charles Bridge at dawn before the crowds arrive — by 10am it is gridlocked with tourists. The astronomical clock (Orloj) chimes every hour; arrive five minutes early for a better spot. Day-trip to Český Krumlov (3 hours by bus) for a perfectly preserved medieval town. Czech cuisine and beer are genuinely excellent and very cheap compared to Western Europe — svíčková (braised beef) is the national dish.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on both banks of the Vltava River in a basin of rolling hills. The historic city centre sits at around 200m elevation, with the terrain rising to the west at Petřín Hill (327m) and Bílá Hora (380m). The Vltava meanders northward through the city, creating a series of tight loops around which the medieval neighbourhoods developed. The distinctive 'Bohemian' landscape of wooded hills and river valleys surrounds the city.
