According to legend, a wealthy widow named Daun Penh (Grandmother Penh) found four Buddha statues on a floating tree trunk in the Mekong in 1372 CE and built a temple on the hill (phnom) behind her house — Phnom Penh means 'hill of Penh'. The Khmer royal court established itself here in 1434 after abandoning Angkor. The city was evacuated under the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979 — one of the most traumatic episodes in any city's modern history — before recovering under Vietnamese administration and then gradually rebuilding.
