Culture & Daily Life

📜 History & Origins

The area was home to the Duwamish and other Coast Salish peoples for thousands of years. The first permanent European-American settlement was established in November 1851 by the Denny Party at Alki Point. The settlement moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and was named after Chief Si'ahl (Seattle) of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples, one of the first signatories of the 1855 Point Elliott Treaty. The city was incorporated in 1869 and grew dramatically after the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush, which made Seattle the primary outfitting port for Alaska.

Leisure Highlights

  • Pike Place Market — one of the oldest US farmers' markets
  • Space Needle and the Seattle Center
  • Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) — designed by Frank Gehry
  • Chihuly Garden and Glass
  • Ferry to Bainbridge Island — 35 minutes each way

🎒 Visitor Tip

Get an ORCA card for the Link Light Rail, buses, and the ferry system. The Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry is one of the most scenic short transit rides in the US — it's part of the state ferry system so you can use it with a regular fare. Pike Place Market opens at 6am and is most interesting before 10am. The Space Needle view is good but pricey; Volunteer Park water tower offers free views. Carry a layer — the marine climate means afternoon fog or drizzle even in summer.
