Overview

Perth is the capital of Western Australia and the most isolated major city on Earth, with approximately 2.3 million residents in the metropolitan area as of June 2024. The nearest major city of comparable size is Adelaide — 2,700km away. Perth's location in one of the world's richest mineral provinces makes it a global mining hub, handling more than half of Australia's mineral exports through its ports. It enjoys more hours of sunshine per year than any other Australian capital.

📜 History & Origins

The Whadjuk Noongar people inhabited the Perth region for over 45,000 years. Captain James Stirling chose the site on the Swan River in 1827 and the Swan River Colony was formally established on 12 June 1829, making Perth one of Australia's oldest European settlements and the first in Western Australia. For decades it grew slowly due to its isolation, then boomed following the 1890s gold rush in Kalgoorlie and again during the 2000s mining boom driven by iron ore exports to China.
