📜 History & Origins
Oslo was founded around 1048 by King Harald Hardrada. It became the capital of Norway in 1814 following independence from Denmark, though the city had been called Christiania from 1624 (after fire destroyed the medieval city and King Christian IV rebuilt it in a new location) until the original name was restored in 1925. The discovery of North Sea oil in 1969 transformed Norway — and Oslo — into one of the world's wealthiest nations, funding the massive Government Pension Fund and enabling the high-quality public services the city is known for.

Surface area and physical characteristics
Situated at the innermost point of the Oslofjord, surrounded by forested hills (the Marka) that rise to 500–700m within the municipal boundary. The city centre is at sea level, with the terrain climbing steeply in all directions. The Holmenkollen ridge reaches 371m just 8km from the city centre. The Oslofjord narrows to a 250m-wide sound at Drøbak, 40km south, giving the inner fjord a lake-like character. This combination of fjord, forest, and ski slopes all within the city limits is unique.
