📜 History & Origins

First documented in 1158 when Duke Henry the Lion established a market town at a bridge crossing on the Isar River, replacing an earlier settlement of monks — the name München derives from the Old High German Munichen meaning 'by the monks'. Munich became the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria in 1506. The city's famous beer hall culture developed in the 17th century and the Oktoberfest began in October 1810 to celebrate Crown Prince Ludwig's wedding.

🎒 Visitor Tip

The MVV integrated transport network covers all of Greater Munich — a day pass is excellent value. The Deutsches Museum on the Isar island is the world's largest science and technology museum and needs a full day. The Englischer Garten is larger than New York's Central Park and has a famous river surfing wave on the Eisbach — worth watching even in winter. If you visit in Oktoberfest season (late September–early October), book accommodation many months ahead.
