📜 History & Origins
Mumbai was originally a cluster of seven islands inhabited by the Koli fishing community. The Portuguese acquired the islands from the Sultan of Gujarat in 1534 and ceded them to England as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry to King Charles II in 1661. The British East India Company developed it as a trading port. The city was officially renamed from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995 by the Maharashtra state government.

🎒 Visitor Tip
The local train network is the fastest way across the city, though it is extremely crowded during rush hour — avoid 8–10am and 5–8pm. The Gateway of India and nearby Colaba Causeway are the classic starting points. Eating at an Irani café like Britannia or Café Mondegar is as much a cultural experience as a meal. Monsoon season (June–September) is dramatic but transport disruptions are frequent.
