Founded by the Celtic Insubres tribe around 600 BCE as Medhelan — meaning 'in the midst of the plain'. The Romans conquered it in 222 BCE and named it Mediolanum. It became the capital of the Western Roman Empire in 286 CE under Emperor Diocletian. The Edict of Milan of 313 CE — granting religious tolerance throughout the Empire — was issued here.
