📜 History & Origins
Founded by the Celtic Insubres tribe around 600 BCE as Medhelan — meaning 'in the midst of the plain'. The Romans conquered it in 222 BCE and named it Mediolanum. It became the capital of the Western Roman Empire in 286 CE under Emperor Diocletian. The Edict of Milan of 313 CE — granting religious tolerance throughout the Empire — was issued here. The modern city's character was shaped by industrialisation in the late 19th century and post-WWII reconstruction.

The ATM Metro is easy to navigate with a day or multi-day pass. The Navigli canal district is the best area for aperitivo, a Milanese tradition where bar drinks come with free food from 6–9pm. Quadrilatero d'Oro (the Golden Rectangle of fashion boutiques) is worth exploring even without a budget to match.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on the flat Po Valley (Pianura Padana) in northern Italy, at approximately 120m above sea level. The terrain is completely flat — part of the largest plain in Italy formed by ancient glacial deposits. The Alps are visible on clear days to the north, rising to peaks over 4,000m within 50km. The city sits on the watershed between the Ticino and Adda rivers. The historic Navigli canal system — still partially functional — was engineered as early as 1179.
