Culture & Daily Life
📜 History & Origins
The area was inhabited by the Tequesta and later Seminole peoples. Julia Tuttle, a local landowner, persuaded Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to the site after freezing temperatures destroyed crops across Florida but spared Miami in 1894. The city was incorporated on 28 July 1896 with just 444 registered voters. It grew explosively after World War II, driven by air conditioning, Cuban immigration after 1959, and the tourism industry.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Miami Beach and the City of Miami are separate municipalities — most tourist accommodation is on Miami Beach. The Metromover downtown loop is free and useful for navigating the financial district. Wynwood Walls street art district is the most interesting neighbourhood for culture. South Beach's Ocean Drive is worth one walk but tourist-priced; eat well and cheaply instead in Little Havana on Calle Ocho. Hurricane season runs June–November; travel insurance is advisable.

No significant natural elevation anywhere in the county.
