📜 History & Origins
Built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés besieged and destroyed Tenochtitlan in 1521 and immediately began constructing a new colonial capital on the same site, draining the lake over the following centuries. It served as capital of New Spain until 1821 and of modern Mexico thereafter.

🎒 Visitor Tip
The Zócalo (central plaza) is the natural starting point — the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor ruins are on the same square. Mexico City's Metro is cheap, extensive and safe outside rush hours. The Condesa and Roma Norte neighbourhoods are excellent for walking, cafés, and restaurants. Altitude sickness is real at 2,240m — take it easy on the first day if you are arriving from sea level.

Surface area and physical characteristics
High-altitude basin at 2,240m above sea level, enclosed by mountain ranges and two active volcanoes — Popocatépetl (5,452m, 72km southeast) and Iztaccíhuatl (5,230m). Built largely on the dry bed of former Lake Texcoco, much of the city sits on compressible lacustrine clays causing ongoing subsidence. The western boroughs rise steeply into the Sierra de las Cruces.
