📜 History & Origins

The Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation inhabited the region for over 40,000 years before European contact. John Batman controversially claimed to have 'purchased' land from local Wurundjeri elders in June 1835, though the transaction was declared void. The first formal settlement was established in 1835 and the town was named after British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, in 1837. It was incorporated as a city in 1842 and served as the capital of Australia from federation in 1901 until Parliament relocated to Canberra in 1927.
