The area around Manila Bay was settled by the Tagalog people and later became a Muslim sultanate. Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi captured the settlement and established the colonial city of Intramuros (the walled city) on 24 June 1571, beginning 333 years of Spanish rule. Manila was devastated during the 1945 Battle of Manila — one of the most destructive urban battles of World War II — and largely rebuilt afterward.
