📜 History & Origins
The Romans established a fort called Mamucium in 79 AD at the confluence of the Medlock and Irwell rivers. The medieval market town grew slowly until the Industrial Revolution transformed it into the world's first industrial city: by the 1780s cotton mills powered by steam engines made Manchester the global centre of textile manufacturing. The Manchester Ship Canal (1894) connected the inland city to the sea, while Salford Docks became a major port. Post-industrial decline in the 1970s–80s was followed by dramatic regeneration after the 1996 IRA bombing accelerated the city centre rebuild.
