📜 History & Origins
Las Vegas valley was settled by Mormon missionaries in 1855 but abandoned two years later. The area was a small railroad watering stop when Nevada was bought from Mexico. Las Vegas was officially founded on 15 May 1905 when the Union Pacific Railroad auctioned off lots. Nevada legalised gambling in 1931 — the same year construction began on Hoover Dam, bringing thousands of workers to the desert. The El Rancho Vegas (1941) became the first major casino-hotel on what would become the Strip. The mob-built Flamingo (1946) set the template for the era that followed.
