📜 History & Origins
The site on the Lagos Lagoon was settled by the Awori Yoruba people and became a Portuguese slave trade depot in the 15th century — the name Lagos comes from the Portuguese for 'lakes'. It grew as a significant Yoruba kingdom and was a major hub of the transatlantic slave trade through the 18th century. Britain annexed Lagos Island in 1851, deposed the ruling Oba (king) in 1861, and made it a Crown Colony. Lagos was the capital of Nigeria from independence in 1960 until the purpose-built capital Abuja was inaugurated in 1991.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Lagos is intense and requires preparation — traffic is extreme and road journeys take far longer than distances suggest. Stay on Lagos Island or Victoria Island for the most manageable experience. Lekki Conservation Centre has a 401m canopy walkway above Lagos's last remaining coastal forest. Nollywood tours and live music at venues in Mainland Lagos (Ikeja, Surulere) give the most authentic local experience. Arm yourself with a local sim card and use ride-hailing apps for all journeys.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on a low-lying coastal lagoon system — a series of islands, peninsulas and mainland areas separated by the Lagos Lagoon and various waterways connecting to the Bight of Benin. Lagos Island (the historic core) is less than 2km wide. The terrain is almost entirely flat, 0–8m above sea level, with significant areas subject to flooding. The city has expanded dramatically northward onto the mainland.
