Archaeological evidence places human settlement in the Kyiv area as far back as the Palaeolithic era. The city emerged as a major centre by the 5th–6th century AD. In 882 Prince Oleg of Novgorod captured Kyiv and made it the capital of Kievan Rus — the medieval East Slavic state that became the cultural ancestor of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. The city was devastated by the Mongol invasion in 1240 and rebuilt over subsequent centuries under Lithuanian, Polish, and finally Russian rule before becoming the capital of independent Ukraine in 1991.
