📜 History & Origins

Founded around 1857 as a trading and tin-mining outpost where the Gombak and Klang rivers meet — the name means 'muddy estuary' in Malay. Chinese merchant and community leader Yap Ah Loy was instrumental in rebuilding the settlement after fires and conflicts in the 1870s. British administrator Frank Swettenham developed the modern city and it became the Federated Malay States capital in 1896. Malaysia's capital since independence in 1957.
