📜 History & Origins
A small Baloch fishing settlement called Kolachi existed at the site for centuries. The Khan of Kalat fortified it in 1729 and it became a trading port called Karachi. The British East India Company conquered it in 1839, recognising its strategic potential as a natural harbour on the Arabian Sea. Under British rule it grew dramatically as the main port for the Punjab and Sindh. It served as the first capital of Pakistan from independence on 14 August 1947 until the capital was moved to the purpose-built Islamabad in 1960.

Karachi is manageable with appropriate planning — Clifton and Defence (DHA) are the most comfortable and safest areas to stay. Empress Market in Saddar is the atmospheric Victorian-era market hall. Mohatta Palace is a surprisingly fine museum of Pakistani art and history. Karachi's street food — especially the roadside nihari and biryani — is considered the best in Pakistan. Frere Hall and Clifton Beach are pleasant in the cooler months (November–February).
