Overview
Jakarta is Indonesia's capital and largest city, with around 10.8 million residents in the Special Capital Region and over 34 million in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) as of 2025, making it one of the world's largest urban agglomerations. The city generates approximately 17% of Indonesia's GDP and is facing an acute existential challenge: parts of north Jakarta have sunk over 4 metres since the 1970s due to groundwater extraction.

📜 History & Origins
The area around the Ciliwung River mouth has been settled since at least the 4th century CE. The port of Sunda Kelapa — serving the Hindu Sunda Kingdom — was conquered by Muslim forces in 1527 and renamed Jayakarta. In 1619 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) razed the settlement, built Fort Batavia in its place, and made it the colonial capital of the Dutch East Indies. Indonesia's independence in 1945 saw the city renamed Jakarta.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Traffic is brutal — avoid driving at all costs and use the TransJakarta bus rapid transit or the MRT. The old colonial Kota Tua district around Fatahillah Square is the most interesting walking area. Eat at a warung (small street stall) rather than malls for the real local experience. The wet season runs from October to April with heavy flooding risk — check forecasts before travel.
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Low, flat alluvial plain on the northwest coast of Java. The northern parts of the city sit on swampy former tidal flats and have sunk to below sea level in some areas due to groundwater extraction. The city rises gradually toward the south, where terrain is slightly higher. Thirteen rivers flow north through the city to the Java Sea, creating chronic flooding risk.
