📜 History & Origins
Greek colonists from Megara founded the city as Byzantium around 657 BCE on the Sarayburnu promontory at the mouth of the Bosphorus. The Roman Emperor Constantine I refounded and massively expanded it as Constantinople in 330 CE, making it the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire for over 1,100 years. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II conquered the city in 1453 and it became the Ottoman capital until 1922. It was officially renamed Istanbul in 1930.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Get an Istanbulkart from any station for cheap access to trams, metros, buses and ferries. The Sultanahmet area — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar — is walkable and takes at least two full days. Take at least one Bosphorus ferry; the public commuter ferries are fraction of the price of tourist boats and give the same views. Avoid driving — traffic is genuinely severe.

Surface area and physical characteristics
Straddles the Bosphorus Strait, with the European side divided by the Golden Horn inlet. The city is hilly throughout, ranging from sea level to peaks around 200–250m. European Istanbul is divided by hills and valleys; the Asian side (Anatolia) is also hilly but more expansive. The North Anatolian Fault runs nearby, making Istanbul highly earthquake-vulnerable.
