📜 History & Origins

The area was part of the Khmer Empire until the 17th century, when Vietnamese settlers began migrating south from the Red River Delta. The Nguyen Lords established a Vietnamese administrative presence in 1698. The French captured Saigon in February 1859 and made it the capital of French Cochinchina in 1862. Under French rule it developed as 'the Pearl of the Far East', with wide boulevards, colonial architecture and a major commercial port. The US-backed Republic of Vietnam made it their capital from 1954 to 1975.

Leisure Highlights

  • War Remnants Museum
  • Reunification Palace
  • Ben Thanh Market and the surrounding street food area
  • Cu Chi Tunnels — Viet Cong underground network (day trip)
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office — French colonial landmarks

🎒 Visitor Tip

Crossing the street is the first challenge — watch locals and follow them. Motorbike taxis (Grab Bike) are the fastest and cheapest way around. The War Remnants Museum is sobering and honest; the Ben Thanh Market area has excellent street food. Take the evening Saigon River ferry for views of the skyline for almost nothing. The Cu Chi Tunnels (50km northwest) are the most historically significant day trip and require a full morning.

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Located in the Mekong Delta region on the flat alluvial plain of the Saigon River, approximately 80km from the South China Sea. The city is almost entirely flat, averaging 0–10m above sea level. Numerous rivers and canals criss-cross the wider municipality. The terrain's low elevation and river proximity make flooding during typhoon season a serious recurring risk.
