📜 History & Origins

Helsinki was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden as a trading post to compete with Tallinn. It remained a small town for over two centuries. After Finland's annexation by Russia in 1809, Tsar Alexander I made Helsinki the new capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812, commissioning German architect Carl Ludwig Engel to design the neoclassical Senate Square and surrounding buildings that still define the city centre. Finland declared independence in 1917 following the Russian Revolution.

Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral are the photogenic centrepiece. The Design District along Uudenmaankatu has the best design shops and Alvar Aalto treasures. In summer, take a ferry to any island sauna or the public Allas Sea Pool.

Geography & Climate

🌍

Land & Terrain

Surface area and physical characteristics

Built on a peninsula of exposed Precambrian bedrock jutting into the Gulf of Finland, with an archipelago of 315 islands. The bedrock is mostly polished granite smoothed by glaciation, giving Helsinki its distinctive rocky outcrops and coastal landscape. Elevation is low throughout — the highest point in the municipality is barely 60m. The city sprawls across multiple peninsulas and headlands connected by bridges. Winter ice often freezes the inner harbour.
