Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and its political and cultural heart, with approximately 5.25 million residents in the city proper and over 8.5 million in the wider Hanoi Municipal area as of 2025. First established as a capital over 1,000 years ago, it is one of Southeast Asia's oldest cities. 📜 History & Origins
The site on the right bank of the Red River has been settled for millennia. In 1010 CE, Emperor Lý Thái Tổ moved the Vietnamese capital here from Hoa Lư, naming it Thăng Long — 'Ascending Dragon' — after reportedly seeing a golden dragon rise from the river. It served as Vietnam's capital, with brief interruptions, for over 800 years. In 1831 Emperor Minh Mạng renamed it Hà Nội meaning 'city within the river bend'. It became the capital of reunified Vietnam in 1976.

The Old Quarter (36 Streets) is dense, chaotic and fascinating — best explored on foot in the morning before traffic peaks. Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ngoc Son Temple on its island are central and free to walk around. Bia hoi corner — the intersection of Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen streets — is where local draught beer costs 5,000 VND a glass. Halong Bay (180km, 4 hours by bus) is the essential day trip or overnight excursion. Winter (December–February) is cool and grey; summer (June–August) is very hot and humid.
