Known as the birthplace of mariachi music, tequila (the agave fields of nearby Tequila are UNESCO-listed), and charreada (Mexican rodeo), it is also called the 'Silicon Valley of Mexico' — home to major tech campuses of Intel, IBM, Oracle, and HP. 📜 History & Origins
Guadalajara was founded on 14 February 1542 after several failed attempts at earlier sites. The city flourished as the colonial capital of New Galicia, the western region of New Spain. During the Mexican War of Independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued his famous decree abolishing slavery in Guadalajara in 1810. The city grew rapidly in the 20th century as migration from rural Jalisco and the rest of western Mexico swelled its population. The 1990s tech boom made it Mexico's most important technology and outsourcing hub.

Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Situated in the Atemajac Valley, a broad highland basin of the Sierra Madre Occidental at approximately 1,560m elevation. The valley is ringed by volcanic hills and ridges. The Santiago River (Río Grande de Santiago) drains the valley to the west. Lake Chapala — Mexico's largest natural lake at 80km long — is 50km south. The high elevation moderates the subtropical climate, giving Guadalajara one of Mexico's most comfortable year-round temperatures.
