📜 History & Origins

Archaeological finds confirm a Roman military settlement (Nida) existed near present-day Frankfurt from around the 1st century CE. The first documented mention of Frankfurt under that name was in 794 CE when Charlemagne held an imperial assembly — a Reichstag — here. Frankfurt served as the site of Holy Roman Emperor elections from 1356 and coronations from 1562, and was the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1749.

🎒 Visitor Tip

Frankfurt is the main air gateway into Germany — Lufthansa's hub is here and the airport is directly connected to the city by S-Bahn train in 11 minutes. Despite its reputation as a banking city, the Römerberg medieval square and nearby Old Town (rebuilt after WWII) are attractive and walkable. The Museum Embankment (Museumsufer) along the Main River contains 16 museums in a single boulevard. Apfelwein (apple wine) is the local drink — try it in Sachsenhausen.
