📜 History & Origins

Foshan — meaning 'Buddha Mountain' — has been an important manufacturing town since the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. It became one of the four great commercial towns of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), renowned for its silk, ironware and ceramics. The Ancestral Temple (Zumiao) at the centre of the old town dates to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) and remains one of southern China's best-preserved Lingnan-style complexes. Foshan's modern manufacturing transformation began with the Reform and Opening Up policy from 1978.

The Ancestral Temple (Zumiao) complex with its lion dance performances is the most historically important attraction. Shawan Ancient Town (part of Guangzhou, accessible from Foshan) and Xiqiao Mountain are excellent half-day trips. The ceramics wholesale markets in Shiwan and Nanzhuang are vast and worth seeing for the scale alone.
