📜 History & Origins
The Vikings established a longphort (fortified port) at the confluence of the Liffey and Poddle rivers around 841 CE, calling it Dyflin. The name derives from the Irish Dubh Linn meaning 'black pool'. An earlier Irish settlement called Baile Átha Cliath — 'town of the hurdle ford' — existed nearby, and this remains the city's Irish-language name. The Normans captured Dublin in 1170 and built Dublin Castle, which served as the seat of British administration in Ireland for 750 years until Irish independence in 1922.

🎒 Visitor Tip
Dublin is very walkable — the city centre is compact and most major sights are within a 30-minute walk of each other. The Luas tram and Dublin Bus cover the suburbs. The Guinness Storehouse is the most visited tourist attraction but is expensive; the Long Room Library at Trinity College (Book of Kells) is cheaper and architecturally extraordinary. Pub culture is central to Dublin life — it is entirely normal and enjoyable to sit in a pub for three hours nursing one pint. Book accommodation well in advance for St Patrick's Day (17 March).
Geography & Climate
Land & Terrain
Surface area and physical characteristics
Built on a coastal plain at the mouth of the River Liffey on the south side of Dublin Bay. The city is largely flat near the coast and riverside, rising to the Dublin Mountains (highest point Kippure, 757m) about 15km to the southwest. The northern suburbs are on low-lying plain; the southern suburbs rise into the Wicklow foothills. The bay provides a dramatic eastward horizon from the city centre.
