📜 History & Origins
The Dhaka area has been inhabited since the 1st millennium CE and was a prosperous Mughal regional capital from 1608, when Islam Khan chose the site on the Buriganga River as capital of Bengal Subah. It became world-famous for its Muslin cloth — the finest ever woven, described by Mughal emperors as 'woven air'. The city declined under the British and then revived as East Pakistan's capital from 1947. Bangladesh declared independence here on 26 March 1971.

Dhaka is a city of extraordinary energy and density — prepare for sensory intensity. Rickshaws are the best way through the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka (Puran Dhaka). The Lalbagh Fort (unfinished 17th-century Mughal citadel), the Armenian Church and Ahsan Manzil Pink Palace are the key historical stops. Star Mosque and Dhakeshwari Temple are architecturally remarkable. November to February is the most comfortable time to visit; monsoon season (June–September) brings severe flooding.
