📜 History & Origins

The site was a small fishing village of the Mzizima people. Sultan Seyyid Majid of Zanzibar chose the site in 1866 to develop a new port and trading town, naming it Dar es Salaam. German colonial authorities made it the capital of German East Africa in 1891. Britain took control after World War I and maintained it as the capital of Tanganyika until independence in 1961 and the formation of Tanzania in 1964.

🎒 Visitor Tip

Dar es Salaam is primarily a working port city rather than a tourist destination — use it as a gateway to Zanzibar (2 hrs by fast ferry) and the national parks. The Dar es Salaam ferry terminal is the jump-off for Zanzibar, Pemba and the Mafia islands. The National Museum and Village Museum are the most worthwhile city attractions. Kariakoo Market is the main market area — energetic and authentic. The DART rapid bus transit runs along the main corridors.
