📜 History & Origins

Originally a fishing village called Havn (harbour), Copenhagen was first mentioned by the historian Saxo Grammaticus in the late 12th century. Bishop Absalon of Roskilde fortified the settlement in 1167, a date considered the city's founding. It became Denmark's capital in the early 15th century under King Eric of Pomerania. The city was shaped dramatically by two devastating fires in 1728 and 1795, which destroyed most of the medieval fabric and led to the grid-plan rebuilding visible today.

🎒 Visitor Tip

The Metro runs 24/7 and is the easiest way to get around; the Rejsekort travel card works on all public transport. Noma — even if closed for service — shaped the New Nordic cuisine movement that spawned dozens of excellent affordable restaurants in Nørrebro and Vesterbro. Tivoli Gardens is touristy but genuinely charming, especially in the evening. Copenhagen is consistently one of the world's most expensive cities; eating at a smørrebrød lunch restaurant is the best-value cultural experience.
