Culture & Daily Life

📜 History & Origins

The area was inhabited by the Berber Zenata tribe for centuries, and the Portuguese established a trading post called Casa Branca (White House) in the 15th century. After being destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, the town was rebuilt by Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah as Dar el Beida (Arabic for White House). Modern Casablanca grew dramatically under the French Protectorate from 1912, designed by Resident-General Hubert Lyautey and architect Henri Prost as Morocco's commercial capital.

Leisure Highlights

  • Hassan II Mosque — world's second largest mosque
  • Mohammed V Square — Art Deco Mauresque architecture
  • The Corniche — Atlantic beachfront boulevard
  • Old Medina and Central Market
  • Villa des Arts — contemporary Moroccan art

🎒 Visitor Tip

The Hassan II Mosque is one of the world's great pieces of 20th-century architecture — book a guided tour and arrive early. The Art Deco Mauresque architecture of the city centre (around Mohammed V Square) is largely overlooked but genuinely impressive. The Corniche beachfront boulevard runs along the Atlantic coast and has good seafood restaurants. Ramadan dramatically changes the city's rhythm — research dates before visiting. The medina is smaller and less touristed than Fez or Marrakech.
