Founded on 25 July 1567 by Spanish captain Diego de Losada, on the feast day of Saint James (Santiago) — the city's full name was Santiago de León de Caracas. It was built in a mountain valley to protect settlers from coastal raiding. Caracas became the capital of the Captaincy General of Venezuela in 1777 and is the birthplace of Simón Bolívar, born here on 24 July 1783, who led South American independence from Spain.
